CYNTHIA HENKE

Colon cancer.

Cynthia died of colon cancer which spread to her liver and / or maybe her pancreas too. I think it was about 4 1/2 years ago. She was in remission for a couple of years. The last time she came down was for a reunion of the 76 class, she stayed over night with Phil and I.  It was right after she learned the cancer had come back. Cynthia, Linda and I drove around the old neighborhood and then to Rosebank to reminisce. She wanted to go in the ocean before she died so we went Coronado Beach and ran into the surf... We ate at an awesome Thai place in Coronado and talked for hours. A few months later Linda and I got a letter from her telling us "goodbye" the chemo hadn't worked. I called her and her husband answered. He said she was having a "hard day" but Cynthia said she wanted to talk. We had a sad but beautiful conversation. We shared memories about growing up, family and we got to say goodbye to each other . A few days later husband called me to tell us she passed. He thanked me for calling and talking with her it had lifted her spirits. For me, it was a blessing to be able tell her how much Linda and I love her, and know she was at peace . It was one of those conversations I will never forget! Her younger sister Lana also passed away very young too . She had breast cancer. I think it was in the late 90's.
