Comment:

After high school, I went to UC Berkeley. I was elected Mayor of Chula Vista in 1991. I now work as a child support attorney. I have been divorced for 8 years and have no children, but I do have a beautiful one-year-old niece in Riverside and an 11-year-old godson in Russia.

Mark Nelson (-)

Marital status: Married
Children: 2
Occupation: College Teacher
Comment: Like many of us, I started out with two years of college at Southwestern right out of high school. I transferred to and graduated from Point Loma College (now Point Loma Nazarene University) in San Diego with a BA in music education and performance. I went right on to graduate school at Arizona State and got my masters and doctorate in music performance while teaching music in the Scottsdale AZ school system and eventually a second masters in education administration from the University of Vermont. Monica Carroll and I married in 1984.  We have two sons. Jude finished his Ph.D. in computer science at Princeton University and works for a computer firm foundation from his home in Connecticut as their chief software architect.  He is married with three daughters.   Luke graduated from the University of Arizona with a BA in anthropology,  worked as a middle school science teacher for two years, spent 27 months in Morocco as a Peace Corps volunteer and is a benefits analyst for the Veterans Administration in the Chicago area.   My career took us to Vermont for 9 years where I taught at the University of Vermont and played in the Vermont Symphony Orchestra. We moved to Decatur, Illinois where I was tenured as a full professor at Millikin University as head of music education and finally moved back to Scottsdale for another stint of public school teaching until I accepted the Performing Arts Department Head position in 2000 at Pima Community College in Tucson, AZ. In 2020, I moved sideways after two stints as the acting dean of the arts division to the Pima Online arts and humanities department head position and retired after 39 years of teaching in 2021. I was named Faculty Emeritus in 2022 and I still teach online for Pima on a part time basis.  My wife had been a public school teacher and school administrator for 44 years retiring in 2018 as the associate superintendent of the Amphitheater school district in Tucson. We have enjoyed traveling and visiting family and friends all over the country and abroad. My career as a performer and educator has taken me to several countries and many states playing recitals and lecturing at a variety of conferences and venues. I am currently on the board of directors for the Southern Arizona Symphony Orchestra and as its principal tubist and continue to perform in various brass ensembles, orchestras, and on bass trombone in big bands.  Its always nice to return home to family and friends though.
